4 English clubs head abroad as they look to join Manchester City in confirming their place in the last 16.
As is currently the case in the Premier League, Manchester City led the way as they secured their qualification for the Knockout stages in Naples on Matchday 4. As Matchday 5 approaches Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham head to the homes of Qarabag, Sevilla and Dortmund respectively, needing wins to confirm their places in the hat for the last 16 draw. Manchester Utd just need a point away at Basel to confirm their spot on Wednesday meaning that all 5 English clubs could qualified with a group game to spare.
Chelsea and Man Utd will be expecting to get the job done on Wednesday and earn the luxury of being able to rest key players in their final group games. Sevilla and Dortmund may prove particularly difficult tests for Liverpool and Spurs as they look to keep a lid on the talents of the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Wissam Ben Yedder.
English clubs have failed to make any kind of impact in European Competition in recent years as Spanish and German clubs took over the reigns. However, the prospect of English clubs forming 5 of the final 16 teams may be a sign that English clubs are once again serious contenders.
